Happenings in Amsterdam for the long weekend of October 22 - 25

The heating has been turned on and even though the days are sunny they are chilly; but there are lots of events to enjoy this weekend in Amsterdam inside and out!


Ongoing:


Event & Exhibtion: Polderlicht - lichtkunst @ Polderweggebied, Oostpoort (behind the HEMA on the Linnaeusstraat), Friday – Sunday, 19.00 – 24.00, FREE, stuff for kids.

Light installations, sound sculptures, film and video projects, performances, etc… with over 200 projects on display in the building pits, construction areas and redevelopment areas of the Oostergasfabrieks-terrein.


Performance & Dance: Trace: the 7 fingers @ Theater Fabriek, Sunday and Tuesday, €22 – €30.

Traces is an urban acrobatic, explosive energy show. It is made up of the French-Canadian group “The 7 Fingers” artists from Montreal’s National Circus School. They bring to the stage a wild/daring form of acrobatics, laughter, modern dance, slapstick, singing, music, skateboarding and basketball moves.


Exhibition & Event & Museum: Stedlijk in de Stad- Bouwkeet on tour in Amsterdam-Oost @ various locations, but the main places for events is Studio K, ongoing – end of October, Wednesday – Saturday 12.00-18.00, Thursday 'til 20.00, FREE (except for a party on October 17th), most activities in Dutch unless noted.

Thursday, 19.30, film “Chott el-Djerid. A Portrait in Light and Heat” (Bill Viola 1979) and “Manhattan” (Brian Eno 1981). Two video works from the early1980s Chott el-Djerid explores the optical and acoustic images of nature of Midwestern America and Canadian Saskatchewan as compared to the Tunisian desert. Manhattan- a video of the Manhattan skyline in vertical format (you have to turn the monitor on it’s side for viewing. Presented in vertical format (the television or monitor needs to be turned on its right side for proper viewing). With a short introduction from the Stedelijk conservator Bart Rutten about the two video works.

Saturday, 14.00 – 16.00 Play with GoogleMaps: ReMAP Oost using the iPhone application ReMappen, and a presentation about the possibilities of remapping (gaming, visual exploration, etc).


Film & kids: “Het meisje en de engel” w/live soundtrack @ Filmmuesum, October 21- 25 + 28, daily 15:00, €5, in Dutch.

“Het meisje en de engel” (Sophie van Oers & Michel Sluysmans) is a children’s film about a girl who is ill and passes her time “in bed” in an old film hall of her parent’s theater watching and enjoying the films where she is visited by many characters.


Exhibition: The Living @ Huize Frankendael, October 24 – November 1, daily form 11.00 – 17.00, €3.

The Huize Frankendael in cooperation with het Stedelijk Museum present a ten day video art exhibition from artists: Peter Bogers, Sam Taylor Wood, Marijke van Warmerdam, Douglas Gordon, Ulay en Marina Ambramoviç en Job Koelewijn. Each artist has their own room in the house as if you are following a story of a house with various intertwined plots.

ADE's festival program is now complete and is of course set to be bigger and better than ever with over 700 artists, performing in 43 different venues!!! Fatboy Slim live (GB), Faithless (Soundsystem live, GB), Darren Emerson (GB) and David Guetta (FR) have just been confirmed in addition to the staggering array of artists across all genres of electronica.


Photo Exhibition:Fazal Sheikh @ Huis Marseille, €5, ongoing – November 22, but free with Museumkaart.

Fazal Sheikh is known for his monumental and tranquil black/white portraits, which gives names and faces to the people in refugee camps in Kenya, Tanzania and Pakistan.


Photo Exhibition: Daniel Cohen's 'We want more' @ Melkweg Gallerie, ongoing – November 1, Wednesday – Sunday, 13.00 – 20.00, FREE.

Photographer Daniel Cohen (1979, Leiderdorp) takes shots behind the stage at the Melkweg and Paradiso, gathering a group of photographs that portray unique and vulnerable moments of musicians.


Exhibition: Vrijstaat Amsterdam @ Tolhuistuin, daily 'til November 8, FREE.

Vrijstaat Amsterdam (free city) is an exhibition about the future of the city? Nine urban design bureaus display their dreams and ideas. Part of the International Architectural Biennale Rotterdam.


Exhibition & Museum: "Behind Walls" @ Oude Kerk, ongoing - November 10, open daily, price of museum.

A photo exhibition commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall.



Thursday:


Event: Mister Kitchen's Wild Tour @ Bijenkorf, Thursday 17.00 – 21.00, FREE.

The famous Dutch cooks of Mister Kitchen give demonstrations and book signing.


Music and Dance: Moskow Diskow: I Be East @ OT301, Thursday, 21.00, €10.

East European electro and Moscow disco with Dick4Dick, DJ Vijal, DJ Goldfinger.


Music: Off Topic @ Maloe Melo, Thursday, 21.30, €5.

Dutch ska band.



Friday:


Event & Museum: Van Gogh Museum Avond @ the Van Gogh Museum, Friday 18.30 – 22.00, entrée to museum, but free with Museumkaart, stuff for older kids.

In conversation with Van Gogh via spoken word- at 20.00 see Rashid Novaire -a Dutch-Moroccan writer who made his debut at the age of nineteen with the short story collection Reigers in Cairo ('Herons in Cairo'). Later, check out a theater collective Le Nu Perdu's interpretation of the letters. DJ-x-0-x spins tunes the entire night

Music: CD release party for BACON @ Café Pakhuis Wilhemina, Friday, 21.00, €10 inclusive CD.
BACON presents their second album/cd “200GallonsofKisses” which is rumored to be a mix between David Bowie and U2. Check out the release party

Saturday:


Market: Buurtmarkt van der Pekbuurt @ Pekplein, Amsterdam Noord (get of the ferry go straight ahead you will see it on your left near the canal), every Saturday 'til December 26th, 12.00 – 16.00, FREE, stuff for kids.

A new initiative out Noord in cooperation with Stichting Broedstraten and de Tolhuistuin brings together neighbors and visitors. All goods “handmade” in the neighborhood such as delicious handmade Surinamese food (including ginger beer - something like ginger ale), handmade clothes and slippers, haircuts!, and a makeshift cafe.


Music: Unity Festival @ Menner de Wit, Saturday, 12.00 – late, FREE, kids welcome!

A day of reggae in de Baarsjes with live music (Black Prophet, Fullanny, Zed I, Nyaki Massai, Kenny B all backed by Fyah Nation), djs, and fun, including a kids corner.


Film festival: Rocket Film Festival @ various venues, Saturday is the preview, the real festival doesn’t begin til October 28 – November 1, €15.

The second edition of the Rocket Cinema with six evenings of special film showings of classic films with live new soundtracks for example Jaws in the Zuiderbad (swimming pool) on Halloween night. This Saturday check out the “The Blair Witch Project” at Vondelpark. But also “La Belle et la Bete”, “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, “Frankenstein”, and a final party at Paradiso with the Mexican Film Festival. Check out next week's agenda for more details!

Mogil - An experimental music collective from Reykjavik with Iceland land folk tunes. 3Pack – a Dutch Latin band playing Afro Cuban music.


Music: New Cool Collective @ P60, Saturday, 21.00, €15.

New Cool Collective brings a unique sound of a mix of jazz, dance, latin and salsa, with lots of danceable hits!

Sunday:


Expat Fair: I am not a tourist fair @ Beurs van Berlage, Sunday, 10.00 – 17.00, FREE with advanced tickets.

Market: Pure market @ Park Frankendael, Watergrafsmeer, Sunday, 11.00 – 18.00, FREE, activities and crafts for kids.

A monthly tradition of lekker eten (delicious food) mostly organic, as well as other local, sustainable goods, and music. Also creative activities for the little ones.


Film & Create & Resist shows film “Bomb It” @ OT301, Sunday, 20.30, €4.

An evening of social, cultural and political based documentaries. This week is "BOMB IT" a documentary about graffiti.


Music: Flamenco singers Curra Suárez & Yorgos Valiris @ Muiderpoort Theater, Sunday, 20.30, €9.

Live Spanish flamenco artists.

  1. It's the last Puur Markt, don't miss it!The World Heritage garlic and fresh cheese are the best. Also try the hollandse blauwe chicken eggs for an extra special Sunday omelet. There are at least two people selling British-style pies, the pie guy is at the Haarlemerplein on Wednesdays now.
