Vondelpark Openlucht theater, every weekend starting June 6th - August 29th

The Summer activities are just about to begin. Opening day of the Vondelpark Open Air Theater/openlucht theater seems to always mark summer in my agenda with the start of beer sipping, sun soaking and chilling in the park. Now let's just hope for weather above 20 degrees and we will set!

The Vondelpark Open Air Theater/openlucht theater opens Sunday June 6th, thereafter every weekend (Friday - Sunday) 'til the end of August from 14-18ish, always FREE!! There are events throughout the park such as music, plays, comedy, games! Check out the program for more info about daily activities.  There are always events for kids on Sunday and Saturday afternoons, as well as live music in the evenings.

Nationale Dag van het Park, May 30th

Event: Day of the Park@ various locations in NL, May 30th, all activities are for FREE, check out the complete national program.

1) Environmental Market @ Westerpark, May 30th, FREE.

In Westerpark several events happening including street theater, live music, nature excursions and an environmental market. The environmental market hosts a range of products working to promote organic and local produce, recycling, electric transportation, green building and corporate social responsibility.

2) In Oost- Flevopark and Park Frankendael.

In Flevopark from 12.00 to 17.00 hours, there will be party at the pond; including live music, market stalls and activities for kids.

And Park Frankendael hosts the third annual Bloei Feest, which begins Friday with Solar Films, plus the Pure Market on Sunday and a cultural podium from 12.00 - 23.00 including a "Furniture Pimp Parade" at 17.00 - with old furniture by artists 'pimped' to be auctioned. Klein Danzig - the volkstuin in Park Frankendael will host a free painting workshop from 14.00 - 17.00. A picnic pack can be purchased at 17.30 with all organic products and BBQs. A huge amount of activities for kids.

Roncalli Circus near Station Zuid every night til June 13th

I hesitated about posting about the Roncalli Circus a few days ago; thinking it was just a "regular" circus. But then I saw the tents go up and the beautiful set-up and grew very curious about what was happening in Zuid. So I decided to give it a go!

The Circus advertises itself as a `dream with open eyes', with a three hour show of fantastic circus events. The moment you enter the grounds of the circus you are shot back into a time warp (minus the modern lighting and live band playing electric guitars) with lovely wooden karts selling pretzels, cotton candy and foot-long worsts in little buns; the music is jolly; the man checking your ticket is dressed in an elaborate red suit and then you walk into a cozy big top! where the show begins.... it is a combination of original and traditional acts from trapeze to dancing, to magicians, to clown shows, with only one animal performance which involved horses. The costumes are glittering and elaborate, the women entrancing and the men muscular and manly.  All-in-all a very sexy circus. I won't dive into the details as I don't want to ruin the excitement for you, but an event that everyone will love and go home talking about children and adults alike.

The Roncalli Circus takes place on the corner of the Boelelaan/Beethovenstraat, fa ive minute walk from Station Zuid, ongoing - June 13, nightly shows at 20.00, and weekend and Wednesdays shows with various matinee times, average ticket €25 - €40.

And an additional fact (I just found on the ol' wikipedia), the circus which began in 1976 in Bonn and continues to transport everything by train. 

Open Day at the Opera, May 9th

Open day: De Nederlandse Opera @ Het Muziektheater, Sunday 9th May, 12:00 - 17:00.

At 12.00 the doors open with choir workshops for children and adults, tours, performances, demostrations of theater techniques, acting techniques, opera quiz and an open podium. A panel discussion: begins at 14.00 with Klaus Bertischm Dramaturg for the Netherlands Opera speaks with guests about 'Animals on stage'. With musical intermezzos and a grand finale at 17.00.

If you want to show your own talents during the open day, then register for the open podium. If you need musical accompaniment by piano indicate this with your registration. These animations are based on stories that were conceived by children of “Group 6” (10/11 years) of primary school. The participating children were the winners of a writing contest organized by the public library. 10 additional animations will be screened inspired in musical poems, supported by live music.

Architecture workshop for kids, May 8th

Workshop for kids: Archikidz @ Westerpark Gashouder, Saturday May 8th, children 7 -12, FREE, must register in advance here.

A workshop kids about the future of transporation; what is the ultimate vehicle?, what does it look like?, how does it function?  Kids work in small groups with an architect to build different forms of vehicles.

'Waarom lijn 8 niet meer rijdt', a public storytelling/show on May 2

Performance: Openbare vertelvoorstelling 'Waarom lijn 8 niet meer rijdt' @ de Boekmanzaal Stadhuis Amsterdam, Sunday May 2nd, 14.00, FREE, for ages 11+, reservations not possible only 200 seats, in Dutch.

'Waarom Lijn 8 niet meer rijdt'/ 'why line 8 doesn't exist anymore' is a true story about Amsterdam during the occupation in the WWII. And the life of two women who took Jewish children in their house. It also explains why tram 8 no longer exists, as it was used during the War to transport Jewish people from Hollandsche Schouwburg to Centraal station, and from there to Westerbork. After the War it was decided that tram 8 would not be used again due to its history. The production is developed with help from het Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam.

Kids Science Festival, April 24 - 25 at NEMO

Kids + Event: Wetenschapsfestival @ NEMO, Saturday and Sunday April 24 - 25, 10.00 - 17.00, for ages 6 and up, price of museum- € 12.50.

The NEMO hosts the Science Festival for kids, with special events the entire weekend; including a chemistry lesson for 600 hundred kids!, they are hoping to break a world record with this. Lots of other competitions, activities and games to keep the busy bees buzzing.

Pure Markt, Park Frankendael, April 25

Market: Pure Market @ Park Frankendael, Oost-Watergraafsmeer, last Sunday of the month, Sunday April 25th, 11.00 - 18.00, FREE, includes activities for kids.

This is a monthly market with lekker eten (delicious food) mostly organic, as well as other local, sustainable goods, and live music. It is what we might call the Noordermarkt of the east but you can eat your way through the market with picnic tables and ready to eat brunch style food. CHeck out this article for more info.

Then mark your calendars for the rest of the year with markets on Sunday May 30 (which is also Dag van het Park), June 27; then a break over the vacation period, August 29. September 26 October 31 and the final Christmas market on December 19th.

Van Gogh Museum's Friday Night, April 16

Regular event: Friday night @ Van Gogh Museum, Friday April 16th, 18.30 - 22.00, price of museum, free with Museumkaart (and no need to wait in line), stuff for kids.

The Van Gogh holds a weekly special event every Friday with either discussions, presentations, debates, etc... and it always ends with music. This Friday check out "Light Canvas" a presentation and demonstration about the use of lights in art- painting with light starting at 18.30 and with a discussion with the artist Monobanda about the uses, results and impact of light art. At 19.30 get a tour through the Paul Gauguin exhibition (in both English and Dutch). DJ Goldfinger, fills in with his usual smooth tunes.

Imagine Film Festival, April 14 - 24th

Film festival: Imagine: Fantastic Film Festival @ Kriterion, April 14 - 24, various times, €8.50/film, tickets can be purchased here online and or at the Kriterion box office. There is also a kids fantastic film festival @ Filmmuseum, April 18 - 26, for kids aged 3 - 12, various prices.

The 26th annual Fantastic Film Festival takes the stage on April 14 for ten days of futuristic, imaginative, independent and big circuit films. With special sneak previews to films, and a Night of Terror at the Pathé Tuschinski, check out the program for more details. Let your imagination run wild.

Natonal Museum Weekend April 10 -11

Event: Museum Weekend @ through the Netherlands, and of course here in Amsterdam, April 10 & 11, various prices from FREE - discounted tickets.

A good way to save some cash in the middle of 'the crisis' is to take advantage of the many free (aka subsidized) events this City has to offer. This upcoming weekend is filled with FREE opportunities as 25 Amsterdam museums partake in the national Museum Weekend. (Ok, not all the museums are free, but many also offer substantial discounts.) Check out the list of participating museums here. Most museums have organized special events including a photography workshop for kids at FOAM; the Persmuseum will hold a book market; and you can even check out the tourist jaunts of the Amsterdam Dungeon (for FREE), or Madame Tussauds (with a discount); as well as the recently renovated Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam (with a discount and tour at 14.00).

Eerste Paasdag Funky Market at Westerpark

Market: First Easter day Market @ Westerpark, Zuiveringshal Oost, Sunday April 4, 12.00 - 18.00, FREE.

Westerpark's monthly Sunday market starts up again this Sunday, and there following (nearly) every first Sunday of the month. The market includes handmade clothes, goods, art (everything from interior goods, to jewelry) and food with 100 stands. Entertainment and workshops for the kids are also provided.

Pure Markt is back!:) March 28th

One of my favorite events from last year is back- the Pure Markt; the opening weekend is next Sunday- March 28th! This is a monthly market with lekker eten (delicious food) mostly organic, as well as other local, sustainable goods, and live music. Amsterdam Noord/Zuid Lijn Uitkijkpunt

Did you know you can get a glimpse into the underbelly of the controversial Noord/Zuid Lijn? Every Tuesday - Sunday from 13.00 - 18.00 Uitkijkpunt Rokin (lookout point on the Rokin) is open for your viewing pleasure.

The lookout point is easy to find - near tram stop Spui on the Rokin a large piece of lighted scaffolding emerges from the bowels of the City. There is a small gated entrance gate with a security guy to monitor you:). It is a free self-guided tour of a finished building pit which will one day, possibly, be the home of a new metro. The tour includes pictures, history, and of course the view of the actual site.

Happenings in Amsterdam December 10 -13

Every week we at Busy in Amsterdam, in the process of making the agenda, sort through all the flyers we collect, scan numerous Dutch agendas, and scour the internet to bring you a list of hand-picked happenings. Only 30- 40 or so events make the cut (it is not physically possible for us to translate everything!); and usually the events that don't make the list are dropped because they are exclusively Dutch (i.e. discussions in Dutch) or films without any English subtitles, or what we consider accessible (the schedules of the City's biggest and most popular clubs and music venues). More importantly we also try to post "uncommon events", we all know where to find the best beats or where to catch a film; thus we seek out the creative, sometimes strange, original happenings that make Amsterdam the place we love. Of course it goes without saying that we will miss something and since we make this agenda for fun and don’t receive any funds or subsidies, we essentially rely on you and your networks, as well as our own, to keep this agenda as up-to-date as possible. Film: Jewish Film Festival @ het Joods Historisch Museum & Kriterion, December 9th – 13th, various times for films + special events, €8/film or €34 for 5 films, check out the program.

The eighth edition of the Jewish Film Festival with the them “Made in Holland: jewish filmmakers in Dutch cinema”. The festival is honor of all Jewish filmmakers from the beginning of the 20th century to present, brining a mix of film genres and topics. It is a mix of films from the period 1933-1940; a time when many German Jewish filmmakers fled to Holland in exile to produce films, as well as films from after the war.

Music & Art: Adam Pendleton's BAND @ Frascati, December 13 – 14, 20:30, €12.

Adam Pendleton's BAND is a form and content refashioning of Jean-Luc Godard's Sympathy for the Devil. Made in the aftermath of May '68, the original film helped mark Godard's break from his Nouvelle Vague period into a more committed engagement with the politics and class struggles of the time. BAND unfolds in stages, it began at the Toronto International Film Festival with a rehearsal/film-shoot and live concert by the indie-rock/post-punk band Deerhoof. The Amsterdam performance/film screening will present the first edit of footage from Toronto with work-in-progress sequences from texts based on the work of authors explicitly related to Godard's film, such as black power activist Eldridge Cleaver; or tangentially related, such as Gertrude Stein. The final stage of BAND will occur as a solo-exhibition at The Kitchen, New York in Fall 2010.

Visual Art: Please Please Me @ Brakke Grond, December 12 - January 17, FREE, with a special opening night Friday December 11th, 21:00, €5.

With his theatrical sculptures, subtle drawings and a completely equipped SM-darkroom, the Belgian visual artist Michaël Aerts presents an overview of his largely monumental work. Please Please Me not only sizzles with inferred significance, but also attempts to draw the spectator out of the groove of his or her daily routine. The Friday opening will include live music and DJ.

Their performance consists of homemade costumes, offensive poetry, improvised noise, occasional nudity, cardboard props, audience participation and D.I.Y. pyrotechnics. If you missed this documentary at the IDFA this is your chance to enjoy this award wining production. Farewell tells the story of the English journalist Lady Grace Drummond-Hay the only woman on Graf Zeppelin which made a flight around the world in 1929. Drummond-Hay tell the story of a world in crisis and Europe in ruins after the 1st World War. For this documentary only historical imagery was used.

Happenings in Amsterdam November 26 - 29

First off Happy Thanksgiving to the Americans!, hopefully you have all found a place to eat the big meal among friends or family. If you have yet to find a place for dinner you might want to check out the ABC Treehouse's Thanksgiving potluck.

I have promised a few people this week that I would post a couple 'important' links. But before that I want to mention I am not sponsored by any one or any company so these suggestions are personal tips that I think you, too, may find helpful. The first is buienradar.nl - a website that provides five minute snapshots of the Dutch skies. Why we love this website?! - you can reasonably estimate when to run out of the house and not get soaked down to your onderbroek!

The second is an item that I frequently post about within the happenings- the Museumkaart. The Museumkaart (website only in Dutch) is a national museum pass organized by a stichting (non-profit) that gets you into 400 museums in the Netherlands for €35/year (€17.50 12-24 years old, kids 12 and under are free at most museums). Within Amsterdam you can visit over 30 museums (as many times as you want) including: the Allard Pierson Museum, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, FOAM, De Nieuwe Kerk, Filmmuseum, Huis Marseille, Joods Historisch Museum, Ons' Lieve Heer op Zolder, Museum Het Rembrandthuis, Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst Montevideo, Scheepvaartmuseum, De Oude Kerk, Persmuseum, Rijksmuseum, Tropenmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Verzetsmuseum, and even the newly opened Hermitage Amsterdam! The card can be ordered online and mailed to your house in five business days.

And now another essential to Dutch living, especially if you are taking the train to other cities- the OVfiets. The OVfiets is a service run by NS that provides cheap bike rentals at a majority of train stations throughout NL. For approximately 10 euro for a year membership you can rent really good quality bikes for €2.50/24 hours (maximum two bikes per rental, each €2.50). What that means for you?- day trip to another city, scan your pass, hope on the bike, and explore! I have also found it was a tremendous advantage when guests came to visit, a three day visit for two guests to rent two bikes ends up being €15 =a lot cheaper than renting MacBikes but just as sturdy.

Now enough about building your Amsterdam 'toolkit', let's get to the good stuff...

Rietveld UnCut is the third annual event that presents the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in full departmental extent to an audience, complementing the yearly open day and graduation show. De Brakke Grond will be transformed into a fictional film set. Friday evening November 27th the art academy will present a dynamic program supervised by guest director, artist Maze De Boer. Students experiment with the possibilities that a framework of a film set has to offer; ranging from props to posters, trailers to performance, set to soundtrack and everything in between. Visitors will be challenged to interact. With a green room that has been turned into a cloakroom and rattling sewing machines in the sweatshop, among others.

Happenings in Amsterdam November 5 - 8

20 years ago this week (November 9th to be exact) the Berlin Wall fell; Amsterdam is a host to various events commemorating this historical event throughout the month of November. Check out the program; events include music, film, art, and debates.

One of the more popular, and arguably unique, events of the year takes place this weekend is on Saturday- Museumnacht or “Museum Night”. 42 museums offer a unique blend of themed art, performances and surprises from 19:00 until 02:00. The program includes jazz, rock, poetry, dancing, photography, new media, and workshops. Most venues also offer food and drinks up close to some of their most prestigious objects, so be careful not to trip and spill. Bring a woolen hat, cap, raincoat and umbrella as in years past its been cold, windy and rainy and sometimes you have to wait in lines especially outside the Portuguese Synagogue – but it is worth seeing a candle filled room and a live male chorus (there is no electricity used in the synagogue). But I can assure you that the events make up for any waiting and dreary weather and there is usually gluhwein on sale to warm up your bones. The North Sea Film Festival (NSFF) is a 3-day festival that started as a platform for underwater filmmakers. Since these films are also popular with film, nature and art lovers the festival developed into a weekend packed with water related films, debates and art for a wider audience.
