New Years in Amsterdam and other end of the year happenings

For those of you sticking around in Amsterdam over the winter break we wanted to make a few suggestions for the winter days into the new year. Included are a few tips for some of the biggest and greatest parties for Oud en Nieuw (New Years Eve). Enjoy the snow and have a lovely New Year! See you back here in 2010!:)

Exhibition: Niet Normaal @ Beurs van Berlage, ongoing 'til March 7, 2010.

The exhibition, entitled: Niet Normaal * Difference on Display, features the work of internationally renowned artists who in their work address the question of: what is normal and who decides?

“Even as technology and progress generate new opportunities for people of all sorts, shapes and sizes, we seem to be striving to become ever more uniform. The market and the media increasingly determine how we look at ourselves and at each other. Perfection is the norm. What is this norm, and who actually satisfies it? Where do we draw the line? At a facial wrinkle, a depression, at someone who isn’t interested in getting ahead, at a visible prosthetic device, taking pills to improve intelligence, at major cosmetic surgery?” - jacht-op-jan-modaal.nl

Film: Hitchcock's The 39 Steps @ Filmmuseum, running daily 'til the end of December at 17.00, prices vary.

The Filmmuseum presents a new copy of Hitchcock's comdedic thriller The 39 Steps from 1935.

Circus & Kids: Wereldkerstcircus @ Carre, December 18 – January 3, 2010, various times and prices €15 - €51, for kids.

The World Christmas Circus is an annual tradition at the Carre. The completely indoor circus celebrates 25 years of circus programs as the most loved and awarded circus in Europe.

Thursday:

Activities & Kids: Christmas Canal Parade @ starts on the IJ through the Prinsengracht and finishes at Oosterdok (Centraal Station), Thursday the 24th, events start at Movenpick Hotel at 18.00, parade starts at 20.00 – 22.00, FREE.

Think light parade but on the canals with a parade of boats decorated with lights, music, and choirs. The pre-parade rally begins in front of the Moevenpick Hotel and then makes it way through the canals with a finale party at the Moevenpick.

The Parties

Oud en Nieuw aka New Years Eve - New Years Events in Amsterdam are usually expensive ranging from 30 – 50 euros for a night. You must buy your ticket in advance, so don't let your friend tell you that they don't know where they want to go, buy the tickets this week! Below are a few of our suggestions.

Furthermore even bars and cafes hold special events which require tickets, so planning to just catch a beer while waiting for midnight fireworks at NieuwMarkt you will most likely be asked to pay a cover charge. Busy in Amsterdam suggests bringing your own drinks to enjoy the fireworks at the squares, then cycling on the IJ to enjoy the fireworks from every direction and finally making your way to your 50 euro party!:) And of course ENJOY!

Party: Pacific Luna Parc, New Year's Eve, 22.00 – 06.00, €27.50, tickets can be purchased at the bar at Pacific Parc, usually sold out so buy in advance!

Busy in Amsterdam recommends this New Year's Party, guaranteed to please an indecisive crowd – those that love live music, techno/electro djs and entertainment.

For this New Years party Pacific Parc and de Zuiveringshal are transformed into a gigantic lunapark (fair grounds). There are four halls of bands and music, a freakshow with fire and sword eaters, chill out rooms, games, food and diverse djs. The line-up includes: dj\'s Bennis Burke, Guzz, Mappe, Bone en Cowboy & Henk; Bands: Jane Walton, The Anomalys, APC en The Dust; and freakshows from the Squidling Bros Circus Sideshow (specially flown in from New York for this event), Insectavoria and Roc-it.

Party: SleazeFeest/Dazzleville @ NDSM werf, New Years Eve, €45 in advance and €55 at the door, check out the program http://www.dazzleville.nl/programm.html.

Artists open their doors to a night of celebration, music and evening madness...with more than 45 dj's, live-acts and performers to take the stage. The entire night a bus will run between the NDSM werf and Buiksloterweg (Amsterdam Noord ferry, which will run the entire evening back to the Center).

Ball Masquerade @ Paradiso, 22.00 – 06.00, early bird tickets are 37.50, must wear a mask.

Celebrate New Year in a more traditional way with a masked ball. The event circles around a burlesque show circa Las Vegas 1959, also includes 3D films (you get the glasses at the door), dancing, music with the Amsterdam BeatClub tunes and live tunes from the The Cherry Boppers (Spain). Dresscode: Las Vegas showgirl meets glamrock cowboy.

The New Years Eve Mash Up @ OT301, New Years Eve 23.00 – late, only 10 euro! (no presale.

OT301 promises a less expensive evening then other venues with electro, disco, dubstep, acid and techno music; giving you an overview of some of the regular dj crews in the City. Including Klerezooi (Matjesdisco), Tom Schivez (Basserk), Power vs Power, Bomb Diggy DJ’s, Sicore (Ki-tek), Kazeko (OT301)
Jah Depender (BassCulture), and MC General Trix.
